The Good God

I went to a funeral recently a great uncle on my mother's side. Bob was a great guy, I saw him once every year or so at family things. He and his wife always sent us a Christmas card. All memories I have of him are good.

What I didn't know was that Bob was a believer. Apparently quite a real church-goer. The service was pretty long and there was a lot of Jesus.

If I had still been a believer, I would have really enjoyed the message. It was one of all hope, no hellfire and brimstone, nor do I remember much proselytizing. This was a God of hope, love, peace.

Now, we all know that that God is only in some of the Bible, but if one didn't know better, it sounds pretty sweet.

Don't Do These Things

I saw this video on a blog today. I have to say the number one is number one and lead to the other five.

Us and Them

Since coming out of the "way", I feel like I can go back to thinking my own thoughts in my own mind. There is no more RIGHT and WRONG. No more Us vs. Them. I don't care for it, never have. I guess part of it has to do with my upbringing. My dad was/is? liberal minded in politics and my mom never spoke much about them. But, I was never told what to think regardless.

But the straight up I'm right and they're wrong rhetoric just rubs me the wrong way more than ever before. We are all in this mess together. You don't know what has shaped another's worldview and just beating your own drum louder and louder just leaves us all with tons of noise.

I was witness to such a conversation yesterday and glad I had good excuse not to be involved. I'll leave out all the details, but it boiled down to from point A. (one particular political party) leads to point B. BABYKILLAZ!!

War though? That's cool.

Some Nice Stuff

I'll make this quick. I have one day off this week.

ONE

That is today. My best intentions on getting up early and getting a bunch of stuff done were thwarted by a raining morning and cuddly kitty, so I didn't.

Anyway, I had an interesting table on Sunday. One elderly man at a table meant for four in the center of the dining room. We were just starting to get the after church crowd in and I noticed that Theresa had a group of them in her section. The elderly man was hard of hearing, missing quite a few teeth and looked pretty disheveled overall. After some time going over the menu with him, he decided on a Filet and soup and salad. I noticed the eldest gentleman from Theresa's party come and talk to the man, shaking his hand, although I didn't hear the conversation. I thought maybe they knew each other.

"Alice, the man at table 15 wants your guy's check."

I gave it to him, he paid and left me a 50% tip.

After my guy was done, he asked where he should pay and I told him it had been taken care of already. He told me to thank whomever did it and I said I would.

Later, the party was still there and I thanked them for the old man. I also said that I didn't give away who paid the tab, and he said, "good" with a warm smile.

It was just a nice thing to see.

Jack

He's an in and out manager that floats from store to store in our area. He's young, no more than 30 I'd imagine. A nice guy, fair, but takes no crap and tells it like it is.

I'd noticed the crown of thorns tattooed around his wrist and well as some other religious inkings on his arms.

My daughter often gets done with her work earlier than me, and as we ride together, she has to wait. She really enjoys talking to the managers and others in the office as they do the paperwork. Jack and her were talking about things and he asked her if she was religious. She said no and he asked if I was, to which she said NO. She also added that it was kind of a sensitive issue.

He told her that he believes, but knows that there is no fact in which to base it. It helped him and gave him hope, but he cannot prove that it is true. Wouldn't that be a much easier way to go, I thought.

I wonder sometimes why I was so intent on demanding it be TRUTH. Not that I would do it differently, just why.
