Imprecatory Prayers

I've been thinking a lot about this. As a believer, I didn't pay much attention to it, I guess, but there are places in the Bible where prayers are offered as to the destruction or judgement of enemies.

On a personal level, I wished that I had access to this kind of thing in recent weeks. Two different personalities I deal with in my work world need a good smack of Heavenly judgement. I can get along with just about anyone, really, but sometimes there are just those people to whom I wish would just leave my existence. And usually I don't wish any specific harm on anyone, but maybe it's just gone too far in these cases (I'll spare the details, but it creates a bad working environment and some amount of mental anguish on my part).

I'm not one to run to tattle and not one to confront, so I'm left with what the only option I used to have was. And I have really been keen on the Karma idea lately.

And then....

I think about the idea of praying for those who are awful (I'm paraphrasing) and the totally different mindset that invokes in me. I'm a bit of both right now. Vengeful, yet wanting to be on the higher ground.

Speciesism

I just watched a documentary this afternoon about the way in which animals are treated in order for us to use their products. I think just about everyone knows that we don't want to really see what goes on in the factory farms (I sure don't) but we know.

But this movie is not about the shock and horror pics and undercover footage. It's about questioning the ethics behind why we do what we do. Why are dogs and cats loved, but pigs and cows eaten? Just because we've always done a thing, does that make a thing right?

So much food for thought here and lots of things that have been on my mind.

I rented it on Amazon for $1.99, but I'm sure you could find it free somewhere.

Humanity

I first heard the news yesterday from William, my co-worker who used to live in Orlando and knew some of the bartenders and regulars at the nightclub where it all happened. He said he'd heard from several of his friends, but not all. Thankfully, he wasn't still there.

I got to thinking this morning about when homosexuality hit home, and when it did, I was a fundamentalist Christian. Just four years ago, I would have been saddened by all this, but very afraid that all those poor people were going to Hell, The shooter too, of course, for following a false God.

I don't follow any religion anymore, although I do find bits and pieces of things useful. I do like the idea of Oneness. We are all one humanity and what hurt one hurts us all and what helps one helps us all...in some sense.

It's just so sad that we are capable of such horrible deeds.

Man

Leaving religion surely changed the way I looked at my fellow man. As time goes on, I find it to be shaping more of the way I look at everything.
