Beans: Five Years Later

As I am cooking up a large batch of black beans today, I recalled how much I HATED beans just five years ago.  I even did a series here about how I planned to use up all the stockpile we had at the time.

Now, I eat beans all the time. Since I stopped eating meat, it seems I've gained my taste for beans.

Things change.

I'll freeze these in about 2 cup portions and use them for taco filling, salads, maybe bean burgers, etc. Two of my kiddos are trying to go veg (their idea) too, and have been willing to experiment with their own favorites.

I find that black beans are my favorite, but recently had some house made vegan sausage at a local pizza place and learned that is was made from oats and pinto beans. I'm definitely interested in trying something like that out, it was very good.

I don't post much about my new love for vegetarian cooking here, but I do on my Instagram (as well as other things) so follow me there if that kind of thing sounds interesting.

I'm doing more posting there than anywhere at this time.

Crab Legs

I just thought this was funny.

One of our managers drew this on our white board, then had to add a note so it wouldn't be erased (again). We are having a crab leg special.

We'll just cook you up and eat you then :P

Seriously, since I've gone meatless, it is hard for me to not be a little queasy by these things. I especially love the advertisements that feature a chicken restaurant with a picture of a happy chicken on it or something.  Weird. It never really bothered me before.

Speciesism

I just watched a documentary this afternoon about the way in which animals are treated in order for us to use their products. I think just about everyone knows that we don't want to really see what goes on in the factory farms (I sure don't) but we know.

But this movie is not about the shock and horror pics and undercover footage. It's about questioning the ethics behind why we do what we do. Why are dogs and cats loved, but pigs and cows eaten? Just because we've always done a thing, does that make a thing right?

So much food for thought here and lots of things that have been on my mind.

I rented it on Amazon for $1.99, but I'm sure you could find it free somewhere.

Man

Leaving religion surely changed the way I looked at my fellow man. As time goes on, I find it to be shaping more of the way I look at everything.
