A Brief History of God

One commenter on yesterday's post wrote that the Bible may have been the work of ordinary humans with very human agendas.



It reminded me of a video I had watched sometime ago.

I remember reading in our kids' homeschool curriculum about a certain Pharaoh who tried monotheism. It didn't stick.


In a previous video the narrator talks about John Shelby Spong's Why Christianity Must Change or Die.  

What we see in this History of God is that religion, God, or at least our concept of god changes and those changes must come in order for the religion to survive.

Homer and Mark

Last summer/fall I was researching the historical Jesus and found this very very interesting video series. The whole series is very long, but well done and easy to watch. Although I don't know that I agree with all of it, parts 4-9B deal with a theory that I had not heard of up until stumbling onto these videos.


The theory is that Mark's gospel, the first written gospel historically, was intended to be a piece of fiction and drew much of his story from Homer's The Odyssey .

At the very least, look up the meaning of the name Eurycleia and apply it to Mark 14:9.



Edited to add: One very good point and something I never thought of that the video maker states is that in the Garden of Gethsemane everyone was asleep. Who was recording Jesus' words? An omniscient third person narrator is used in fiction, not eye witness accounts. Interesting.
