Family Movie Night Reviews - Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
We try to set aside Saturday evenings with no guests, no computer, no video games and all sit down as a family to watch a movie together. We don't have cable or wish to subscribe to any kind of movie service, so we buy a DVD once in a while to add to our library. Some are keepers and some are not. Finding it very difficult to find info online about specific movies that fit our criteria, I thought I would start reviewing ours here, on the Monday after mostly, and hopefully be able to be of use to anyone looking to build their own family movie library.
We've had this movie for awhile and the kids have already seen it, but it was the first time we all sat down and watched it together.
I didn't expect much out of it, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Mr. Magorium is a 243 year old guy who runs a magical toy store, but is getting ready to depart (die), so is looking to leave his store to his young employee and hires an accountant to get everything in order. The characters are likable and this movie gives you that "anything is possible" feeling. We should all feel that more often I think:)
It was fun to watch. There were no bad words or romantic situations. There was a lot of "magic" and believe in yourself talk if that is a problem for anyone, but I think it was okay for us to watch.

Family Movie Night Reviews- Bridge to Terabithia
We try to set aside Saturday evenings with no guests, no computer, no video games and all sit down as a family to watch a movie together. We don't have cable or wish to subscribe to any kind of movie service, so we buy a DVD once in a while to add to our library. Some are keepers and some are not. Finding it very difficult to find info online about specific movies that fit our criteria, I thought I would start reviewing ours here, on the Monday after mostly, and hopefully be able to be of use to anyone looking to build their own family movie library.
Well, I don't really know what to say about this one. I was at Disc Replay Saturday trading in some movies (including this one) and shopping for something else. I saw Bridge to Terabtithia in the Kids/Family section and thought it looked fun.
The brief description was that a couple of outcasty type kids create their own fantasy world to escape the pressures of life and so on. The box made it look very Narnia-ish or something like that.
It was not.
The film was not a fun film. There is a huge twist (won't spoil it) that dramatically changed it from a whimsical fairy tale to just plain gut wrenching and sad and just too much emotion for our family movie night preferences.
On the cautions side, there is what the box calls "mild" language (a couple of h-e- double hockey sticks, a d*mn or two, but nothing worse). There are a couple of scenes where the bible and Jesus are brought into question, but not in an irreverent way in my opinion, but an honest inquiry manner.
This movie was too intense for us, though, and sad- really really sad. If your kids are older (preteen to teen) I think it has some good qualities. Otherwise, I would go for much lighter fare myself.

Justice

I'm not sure how it all plays out, but I've been finding in many passages that this law (sowing and reaping) is in effect both in the Old and New Testaments.
A friend recently asked me what I thought about the sins of the fathers thing:
'The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.' Numbers 14:18
I don't know. It doesn't sound very grace-y at all and later on the prophets declare that each person will die for their own sin, not anyone else's.
But about the above Numbers passage. It says the Lord forgives, but does not leave unpunished. Punishment and forgiveness can go together.
Then there are the places where the Law is broken (David and Bathsheba weren't put to death for adultery) or on the other hand seems very harsh (that poor guy picking up sticks on the Sabbath).
God looks on the heart. Something we can't do.
Maybe that is part of it.

Family Movie Night Reviews- Puss In Boots
We try to set aside Saturday evenings with no guests, no computer, no video games and all sit down as a family to watch a movie together. We don't have cable or wish to subscribe to any kind of movie service, so we buy a DVD once in a while to add to our library. Some are keepers and some are not. Finding it very difficult to find info online about specific movies that fit our criteria, I thought I would start reviewing ours here, on the Monday after mostly, and hopefully be able to be of use to anyone looking to build their own family movie library.
Last weekend we viewed this one again. I like this movie. It's funny, cute, mature yet appropriate. There are some good themes such as friendship, forgiveness and doing the right thing. If you've seen the Shrek series and expect this to be more of the same, it really isn't. It's a whole new story.
In brief, Puss is an orphaned cat who befriends Humpty Dumpty at the orphanage where they both grow up. They become best buddies, but Humpty goes bad and tries to drag Puss down with him. Puss is on the run from the law and becomes involved in a plot to steal magic beans from Jack and Jill in order to find the goose that lays the golden eggs and pay back his townspeople for stealing from their bank. They all live happily ever after.
The only caveat I would give is a couple of references (that kids probably wouldn't get) about Puss being promiscuous...but he is a cat after all.

The Mint
Spearmint to be exact
The failed mint row in my tea garden is now filled with 11 small cut-lings that I propagated in this manner.
I got the mint from one of our neighbors and this seems to have worked.
Amazingly all 12 cutlings survived and rooted, but there was only space in the row for 11 of them, but I couldn't bear to throw one out:

Family Movie Night Reviews- Godzilla

This was the 1956 version...see here for more details.
This was one that a neighbor had passed on to us while cleaning out her movie cabinet.
It was in black and white and some of the acting wasn't too great, but all in all a decent move the whole family could watch. The main character smoked a lot, if that is an issue for anyone and there are of course the scary scenes with Godzilla destroying Tokyo and such but it was not over the top. It was about what one would expect from a 1956 sci-fi film. There was no bad language, no hanky-panky, and no blasphemy.
This movie was okay for us to watch.

We try to set aside Saturday evenings with no guests, no computer, no video games and all sit down as a family to watch a movie together. We don't have cable or wish to subscribe to any kind of movie service, so we buy a DVD once in a while to add to our library. Some are keepers and some are not. Finding it very difficult to find info online about specific movies that fit our criteria, I thought I would start reviewing ours here, on the Monday after mostly, and hopefully be able to be of use to anyone looking to build their own family movie library.
I will try to keep my reviews succinct won't be reviewing so much whether I liked the film, but if it is appropriate for all ages.
So, first off:
Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein
Let me say that I had reservations about this to begin with, but we went ahead and watched it anyway. I had seen it several times as a kid and so had the Mr., but I didn't remember every detail.
We did end up watching the whole thing, but we won't again.
There were several instances of bad language, including some blasphemies (depending on your definition of such). The frequent double entendres didn't really bother me, but later on in the film the sexual overtones became much more obvious and although they would go over the litter ones' heads, the older kids didn't need to be witness to them.
This film was not appropriate for us in terms of family viewing.
